Requirement • DIVA – GIS • Image of which shape file is to be made • Data Files • Knowledge of shapefile.
Create Shapefile from an image : Step : 1 • Install DIVA-GIS from http://www.diva-gis.org • Also download the DIVA – manual. PDF file to know about DIVA • Extract and install DIVA into your computer • Click Layer > Add Layer or click on the ‘+’ symbol in the toolbar • Select the scanned image/satellite image and click Open. See Fig : 1 & Fig : 2

Create Shapefile from an image : Step : 2 • Click on Data > Draw Shape • Draw polygons/lines/point, whatever may you wish • To represent an area select polygon (like planes etc.) • To represent a perimeter or line (like river, road etc.) select Line • To represent some place (like city, country etc.) select Point See Fig : 3

Create Shapefile from an image : Step : 3 • To draw points , just click on the places on the map • To draw lines, single click to change direction, double click to end drawing • To draw polygon ,single click to create new vertices , double click to complete the polygon. See Fig : 4
Create Shapefile from an image : Step : 4 • Each time a drawing is completed a table will pop up with three fields • 1st one will be auto-configured and named as ‘ID’ • 2nd one will be ‘Value’ and the 3rd one , ‘Label’ • Write the data either in Label or in Value • It is better to write labels in ‘Label’ field and corresponding data in the ‘Value’ field See Fig : 5
