Patient unique ID • A string of characters of fixed or variable length which is used to dereference an object within a “system” • A set of characters permanently assigned to an individual for identification purposes and is truly unique [not shared with any other individual] MINISTRY OF PUBLIC HEALTH & SANITATION
Why unique ID [1] • One of the Health identifier standards • To positively identify patients • Prevent mistakes e.g. Blood transfusion, surgeries, medical administration • Health insurance, billing, re-imbursement • Facilitate data sharing • Within /across health facilities/providers • Names can be similar but not unique Ids MINISTRY OF PUBLIC HEALTH & SANITATION
