Things Fall apart is about the downfall of a man named Okonkwo and the Igbo culture. Okonkwo rise to be a leader in Umuofia, rural village in Southeastern Nigeria. Then the world he knows turns upside down when European go to Nigeria.
“Okonkwo is forced into exile for seven years, because this traditional Iboman, obsessed with his masculinity, has committed a "female crime," since the boy's death was accidental[35].” • I felt exiled one the first day of middle school. All the others students came from Bell Morris and Spring Hill. I was about the only one from Sarah Moore Greene. I didn’t know anybody.
“As a young man of eighteen he brought honor to his village by throwing Amalinze the Cat. Amalinze was the great wrestler who was unbeaten [1].” • I felt honored when I won nationals when I was 12. ”MIDGET (+0.6)—Bart Satterfield (Knoxville) held just a small lead out of the blocks and then had to hold off the late charge of Laijon White (California Running Stars), who was in lane two, 12.23 to 12.28.”
“As the Christians begin to gain power, the villagers see their traditional beliefs as increasingly outdated and powerless [153].” • I didn’t want my old ps2 when I first laid eyes on the ps3. Everything about it was superior to my old, obsolete ps2.
“Okonkwo’s father, Unoka, was a lazy and wasteful man. Okonkwo despises and resents his father’s gentle and idle ways [4].” • I dislike my daddy for the dumb stuff he be doing. He and I can never see eye to eye on anything.
“There is feast excitement in the village as the Feast of the New Yam approaches. Okonkwo does not enjoy the festival; he prefers to be working in the fields [38].” • I am one to come early and stay late for workout. While I am at school a try to work hard trying to learn as much as I can.
“He had a slight Stammer and whenever he was angry and could not get his words out quickly enough [4].” • On the football field some dude push me after the play. I got mad and wanted to give him a few words, but nothing came out.
Theme • The theme in Things Fall Apart is life hardships can breakdown the strongest of men. • Most of the time things people say don’t bother me. Then sometimes if the day ain’t going my way, I might flip out on anybody. When I get this way I don’t care who you are or what you are.
