  2. What is Tobacco? • There are 4 types of tobacco, can you name them? • Cigarettes • Cigars • Pipes • Chewing tobacco/smokeless tobacco/dip/Snus • What is the name of the drug found in all of these products? • Nicotine

What’s in a Cigarette? • There are around 600 ingredients and many cause cancer • What’s in a cigarette? • Acetone – used in nail polish remover • Acetic Acid – an ingredient in hair dye • Ammonia – a household cleaner • Arsenic – used in rat poison • Butane – used in lighter fluid • Carbon Monoxide – found in car exhaust • Lead – found in batteries • Formaldehyde – used to embalm dead bodies

  5. “Sticky Person” Effects of Tobacco • What are some long-term effects of tobacco? • Cancer (lung, mouth, throat, tongue, gum, breast, pancreatic, etc) • Emphysema • Rotten/decaying teeth • Wrinkles • Asthma • Heart Disease/Stroke • DEATH!! • What are some short-term effects of tobacco? • Bad breath • Smoke odor on clothes, hair, house, car, etc • Yellow teeth and fingernails • Cough • Difficulty breathing • Lungs turn black • Addiction

Straw Breathing Activity • We know that smoking causes difficulty breathing and makes physical exercise more difficult. • Let’s find out just how difficult breathing can be… • “STRAW ACTIVITY” - If you have asthma, you CAN NOT participate in this activity!! • Was it hard to breathe? Would you want to breathe like that all the time?

Financial Implications of Tobacco Use • Do you think it’s expensive to smoke? • How much does 1 pack of cigarettes cost? • $5/pack is the average in the United States • Let’s find out…do the math for the cost of smoking a pack of day for 7 days, 4 weeks, and 52 weeks • $5 per pack x 7 days = $35/week • $35 per week x 4 weeks = $140/month • $35 per week x 52 weeks = $1,820/year

  10. Reasons People Use Tobacco • Why do think people start using tobacco? • Peer Pressure • To Look Cool • Look Older/Grown Up • To relax • Addiction • Lose Weight • Curiosity • Advertising

Smoking in the Movies and Advertising • Tobacco companies spend $29 million a day and $10.5 billion per year to get people to start smoking • Often times they are sneaky by having actors smoke in movies, TV shows, etc. Can you name any movies or TV shows where you have seen people smoking? • 101 Dalmatians, Pirates of the Caribbean, Superman Returns, Talladega Nights, The Bourne Legacy, Mission Impossible, War Horse • America’s Next Top Model, American Dad, The Simpsons • What about ads? Where do you see tobacco ads? • Baseball billboards, sporting events, NASCAR, gas stations/convenient stores

New and Flavored Tobacco Products • There are several new products that have come out and they are targeting young people • Orbs – small pellets that resemble Tic Tacs • Ariva and Stonewall – small mint flavored tobacco lozenges • Snus (pronounced snoose) – smokeless tobacco in a pouch • Camel twisted sticks and film strips – very similar looking to Listerine breath strips • All of these products are DANGEROUS, ADDICTIVE, and contain more nicotine than cigarettes

Secondhand Smoke • What is secondhand smoke? • Secondhand smoke is the smoke that comes from a lit cigarette, cigar or pipe, or the smoke that comes from the smoke exhaled by a smoker • Is secondhand smoke harmful? • YES! Secondhand smoke is extremely harmful and cause cancer, asthma attacks, coughing and other health problems • What can be done about secondhand smoke? • Don’t allow smoking in the car or home and sit in non-smoking sections at restaurants, smoking ordinances, etc.

Apply What You Have Learned! • Enter to win our 1st annual WRITING CONTEST to win cool prizes! • Students may create a persuasive letter, essay, or poem reinforcing what they learned during the Tar Wars lesson. The student’s writing should stress the positive effects of living tobacco-free. • All entries must be received no later than 5 p.m. on January 31, 2013 • Official guidelines and rules will be given to your teacher
