Legacy System Retirement • Review all systems on a regular basis – particularly prior to planning and embarking on a new acquisition • All expenditures to legacy systems should be approved by upper management (CIO) • Using outside sources to maintain legacy systems makes it easier to control • Capture costs of maintaining and enhancing each system • Use costs to help drive and prioritize systems to shutdown • Secure management support to assure you do not continue to invest in systems that are planned to be shut down.
Legacy System Retirement • Determine which systems are not being used • Determine which systems should be replaced / integrated • Some legacy systems may need to stay up during a ‘phased’ implementation • Plan and monitor legacy system retirement • Report on status and progress on a regular basis (see sample report)
