US interventions • US occupies from 1906 to 1909 • US supervised election occur in 1908 • Mangoon sent in • Liberal Jose Gomez wins (led revolt of 1905) • 1912 conservative Menocal wins election. • US intervenes in 1912 to put down revolt by Afro Cubans.
Liberals rebel against Menocal’s relection 1917. US intervenes • Alfred Zayas elected in 1920 under US administration. • Political unrest as result of Dance of Millions Leads to US sending in Gen Crowder to administer until 1923. • True political parties begin to form in 1920s. • Students at Univ. of Havana become active players in Cuban Politics until 1959. • CPC and veterans Parties form in 1923.
Gerardo Machado elected in 1924. • Begins 5 year rule on high note • Becomes brutal corrupt dictator by 1929 • His corruption unites all political opposition in Cuba. • By 1933 events lead to Sgt’s revolt
