Conditions for Collective Behaviour There are three major factors that contribute to the likelyhood that collective behavior will occur: • Structural factors that increase the chances of responding in a particular way • Timing • A breakdown in social-control methods…a feeling of normlessness
London Riots • Occurred on March 30, 1990. • The mob was protesting against a series of taxes. • They gathered at 11 AM, and looting had began to take place by 3 PM. • London Riots
Why do people feel the need to go outside of traditional institutional patterns and organizations • Some activists feel like they cannot get their point across unless they do. • Accordingly, they hold protests, strikes, or establish blockades.
Why do people act collectively rather than independently? • People believe there are strength in numbers. • People may act as a collectivity when they believe it is the only way to fight those with greater power and resources.
