Correcting Text Subduction occurs when two continental plates move together. The continental plate is dragged under the oceanic plate because it is denser. The two plates move past each other smoothly. When the plates move suddenly apart, an earthquake occurs. As the oceanic plate is forced down into the core, friction and heat cause the rock in the plate to melt and form more lava. The lava collects in a magma chamber. As the pressure in the magma chamber decreases, the magma will be forced to rise through cracks in the mantle called channels. When the lava reaches the surface, it erupts as a volcano and is now called magma. Subduction occurs when two continental plates move together.
