  1. AdHoc Committees • Long Term Ground Water Level Monitoring • Integrated Hydrologic Monitoring • 2003 Annual Conference MWMC presentation to NWQMC

  2. Long Term GW Level Monitoring Outcome of June 2002 workshop… development of an adhoc workgroup… The purpose of the workgroup is to evaluate existing ground-water level networks in Maryland in order to make recommendations for their enhancement and optimization MWMC presentation to NWQMC

  3. Long Term GW Level Monitoring Workgroup goals… • Evaluate current ground-water level monitoring networks. • Make recommendations to improve the network based on monitoring objectives. • Publish a report that documents the workgroup’s recommendations. MWMC presentation to NWQMC

  4. Long Term GW Level Monitoring Workgroup organizational members… • County Governments • Baltimore County • Carroll County • Montgomery County • Prince George’s County • State Agencies • Maryland Geological Survey • Maryland Department of the Environment • Federal Agencies • U.S. Geological Survey MWMC presentation to NWQMC

  5. Long Term GW Level Monitoring Objectives of Monitoring Network(s) in Maryland • Climate variability • Ground-water use • Ground water and environmental systems • Ground-water research • Water quality* *Currently not a direct goal of the workgroup MWMC presentation to NWQMC

  6. Long Term GW Level Monitoring Recommendations… • Make recommendations to improve the network by: • Monitoring additional wells • Discontinuing monitoring at certain wells • Changing the monitoring frequency • Workgroup will produces a jointly authored report to Council MWMC presentation to NWQMC

  7. Integrated Hydrologic Monitoring MWMC workgroup on integrated monitoring… • Organized in June 2003 • Agency scientists and university researchers • Planning for 2004 Workshop MWMC presentation to NWQMC

  8. Integrated Hydrologic Monitoring Observations in a whole hydrologic system… MWMC presentation to NWQMC

  9. Integrated Hydrologic Monitoring Assessment questions addressed by integrated monitoring… What are the… • Effects of natural variations in climatic conditions on water levels and flow • Differences in hydrologic system responses in different geologic and climatic settings • Effects of land-use and other human activities on hydrologic system responses • Effects of water extraction for water supply and other infrastructure on water flows and availability MWMC presentation to NWQMC

  10. Thursday November 13 2003 Annual Conference Ecological Restoration Assessment & Monitoring • Morning general session/plenary will include presentations by Chuck Spooner (NWQMC) and Diane Rigas (invited, EPA) • Focus on the assessment and monitoring aspects of urban, agricultural, and tidal restoration. http://www.mgs.md.gov/mwmc/ MWMC presentation to NWQMC
