Rebuilding Your Broken Worldby Chip Ingram“Overcoming desires that destroy” part 2 Teammates March 31 2019 Lee Bennett-Facilitator
Review of James 1:13-18 • “Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God,’ for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt any one. But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.”
James 1:17-18 • “Every good thing bestowed and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation, or shifting shadow. In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we might be as it were the first fruits among His creatures.”
Table talk: biblical characters deceived • Eve: • Adam: • Abraham: • Lot’s daughters: • Saul: • David: • Judas Iscariot: • Peter:
How we allow the enemy to deceive us • We are deceived about the SOURCE of our sin (v.12-14) • We are deceived about the CONSEQUENCES of our sin (v.15-16) • We are deceived concerning the nature and CHARACTER of God (v.17-18)
God’s provision for escape includes: • 1.-Our conscience (Rom. 2:14-15) • 2.-Scripture (Psalm 119:9-11) • 3.-Prayer (Matt. 26:41; 6:13) • 4.-Flight (2 Tim. 2:22) • 5.-Pre-decision & planning (Rom. 13:14) • 6.-Resisting the enemy (James 4:7) • 7.-Selfcontrol-not loving the world (I Jn. 2:15) • 8.-Humble ourselves (I Pet. 5:5-8)
Table talk • Chip warned us about what we allow into our minds. From what sources do you need to guard yourself and how can you do that without putting a roadblock to the gospel message? • Of the provisions for escape in tempting situations, which have you found most helpful? How can these be further cultivated?
Summary of the past 2 lessons • Temptations come from 3 sources: • The flesh (internal desires, lusts, longings) • The world (external values, habits, culture) • The devil (external, enemy of God, a counterfeiter: bogus, fake, sham, foe, bad, phony, not good, pseudo, sham, simulate, fraud, spurious, false)
Closing • “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” by Mahalia Jackson (1961): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Mb0XA2BDx0 • Next two weeks: Upper Room & Triumphal Entry • Prayer around tables
My Lord and my God! Please save me from temptation.
