  1. Everyone: new spot in notebook – “atoms” • WARMUP: 1) Write a definition of matter from your memory. • 2) Write down three examples of non-matter. • 3) Make a sentence using only three letters of the alphabet.

  2. Learning target: • I will demonstrate my knowledge of atoms by making an acrostic in my notebook.

  3. Announcements: • Science fair notebooks due Friday. • There is another mentor letter on line on www.mrjamsa.com • You must read it TOGETHER and then communicate to me you have (with questions) by FRIDAY.

  5. New word for your dictionaries: • Atoms: The smallest particle of an element that still has the properties of that element. They are the tiny “Legos” that make up all MATTER in the universe.

  6. All matter is made of atoms

  7. Old model of atom • Everything spread out – mostly space. • Electrons evenly spread throughout. • Mostly space

  8. Rutherford discovered the nucleus

  9. Typical textbook version of atom • Nucleus: • A) Protons – positive charge (big) • B) Neutrons – neutral charge (big) • Flying around the outside – • A) Electrons – negative charge (tiny) • 2 in the first shell • 8 in each shell thereafter – sort of • MOSTLY EMPTY SPACE

  11. Electron cloud model • Electrons flying around fast – all we can do is visualize where they probably are. • Atoms act AS IF the electrons are everywhere. • But if you look, they jump to one place.
