Richmond, CA • Birthed when a railroad company and a refinery decided Richmond was a strategic location • Founded in 1905, the city grew from 2,150 people to 23,600 people in 1940 as other companies began to establish themselves in Richmond. • WWII began and the Kaiser Richmond Shipyards sprang up on Richmond’s south shoreline in 1941.
Richmond CA • The population boomed from 23,600 in 1940 to 93,700 in 1943 and finally peaking at 101,500 in 1947. • The Great Migration: people from the south, southwest, and midwest moved to Richmond for war time jobs. • The war ended and the shipyards closed in 1945. Many other jobs left and many people left the city. The population dropped to 71,900 in 1960.
Richmond CA • In 1976 Hilltop mall opened and downtown Richmond’s major retailers - Macy’s, JC Penny’s, Thrifty, & Woolworth’s – left for greener pastures. • The population continued to drop until the late 80s. • Over the past 20 years the Latino & Asian population has grown in Richmond while the white and black population has declined. • Richmond has become one of the most racially and ethnically diverse cities.
Living Hope Neighborhood Church • Began in 1949 as Rheem Ave Baptist Church and the founding pastor was there for 21 years! • In the 1960s the sanctuary was added. • From 1970 to 1990 there were several pastors with shorter stints. The church changed its name to Judson Memorial Baptist Church. • 1990 new vision to engage youth and reflect the city’s diversity in the church.
Living Hope Neighborhood Church • Between 1999 and 2007 the church had several short term and interim pastors. The congregation dwindled and considered closing the church. • 2 Big Events: 1) The Saturday ministry is born. 2) The Church is relaunched as Living Hope Neighborhood Church on Easter 2009.

The Importance of the Eye Screening: • Lack of access to eye glass care (felt need) • Relationships & neighborhood/city presence • Divine appointments (spiritual needs) • Helps us learn our neighborhood & city
Acts 17:16-27 • He observed and learned his cultural context • God stirred his spirit by His Spirit • God had sovereignly brought different peoples to that city. • God directed the gospel message contextually. • God was drawing people to Himself.
