“Be the Power of One”Building Character for Success “The Relationship Recipe” Lesson 6.7 Created By: BYU-Idaho Students and Pam Gunter
Challenge for the Week – Follow Up Who can recall what the challenge for last week was? Would anyone like to share an experience how they strengthened their own self-esteem? Or, how they helped someone in need? How did you demonstrate honesty or respect?
Preparation • Materials Needed: • A notecard or piece of paper for each student, crayons, markers, or colored pencils. • Classroom Setup: • Sit at desk or table.
The Activity • Have the students write out a personal “recipe” for the ideal relationship. Each student should think of the important “ingredients” they need for a good relationship and what is important. Have them include the amount of each “ingredient” such as a cup, teaspoon, pinch, etc. • Ideas could include trust, humor, honesty, respect, common interests, good communication, etc. • Have a few students share their recipes with the class. Highlight characteristics/qualities that are outstanding that they can all mentor.
The Object of the Lesson Points instructor needs to bring out: • As the students share their recipes, discuss the similarities and differences. How did they decide the amount for each “ingredient”? Were there some ingredients more important than others? • Everyone needs friends, relatives, teachers, and leaders in our lives to protect, teach and enrich our lives. • When we are surrounded by people that have strong values, help us find happiness in life, are positive, encourage and teach us to learn new skills and talents, we will achieve many goals and help us be the best we can be. • We have many people in our lives that will help us along in our lives. We too, can help others through our good choices and actions.
Challenge of the Week Throughout the week, notice what characteristics you like in others. They could include things such as: • Mother’s cooking; • Father’s determination to fix something; • Grandpa’s laughter; • Friend’s kindness; • Teacher’s creativity. Notice what you can learn through other’s good, strong examples.
