Acceptable limits of degradation of TBC for high-efficient turbines Department Materials (ALSTOM) Lab of Crystallography (ETH Zürich) CTI project Nr. 7820.3 EPRP-IW Project start Nov. 1. 2005 Project duration 24 months
Main issues • Formation of monoclinic phase determines TBC degradation • TBC phase composition depends on: (1) properties of feedstock • (e.g. Y-content), (2) APS parameters of rapid solidification, • (3) annealing scheme, (4) operation conditions • - All factors (1), (2), (3), and (4) are Alstom-specific • Condition matrix of Alstom-specific (1), (2), (3), (4) vs. YSZ • coatings properties has to be constructed. Key parametres • Tetragonalmonoclinic as possible mechanism of stress release • - Microstructure evolution and YSZ phase composition change • Formalism for modeling of TBC aging, TC modeling, TTT diagram
Milestones after month 9 and month 15
Milestones after month 9 and month 15
Basic experimental studies * Embedding and polishing ** We have also other options
Discussion • Communication • Controlling: Microsoft project • Sample preparation • Neutron scattering (SANS) to quantify porosity and openings • TC measurements: free-standing or coating on substrates
