StateNets: RONs Sub-Group February 7-9, 2006 (revised 02/08/2006)
RON Sub-Group Charter Regional Optical Networks (RONs) are already playing an active role in HE Research and Education. In many instances they are also serving K-12, State Agencies and other organizations. Charter for the sub-committee: (@Snowmass, August 2005) • Prepare a white paper to identify and describe the RONs in US The white paper would address the following: • What is the current status of regional networks? • What is the status of current peering agreements between regional and state networks? • What is the strategy for peering regional and state fiber resources and how does it fit with I2 and NLR? • Identify architectures used by these RONs and their future plans • Address the issue of Policy and Architecture issues that will be faced as we envision partnerships within RONs

StateNets RON Sub-Group Survey (11/50) Name of the surveyed organization: Surveyed by: Date: Please type in details for the following survey questions. • Define the Mission of your organization. • What is the status of your organization - Is it Education, Not-for-profit, under the University umbrella i.e. tax status, etc. • What are the driving goals for your network? Example: Flexibility of bandwidth growth, control of research lambdas, etc. • Where is the Network today? Example: Is it planned, build, etc? • How many Route miles of fiber? • Is it leased fiber or managed fiber? Provide details? • Who can use the network? Example Higher Education, State Agencies, K-12, etc. • Usage/Service areas and restrictions: example Is Public-Private partnership allowed on the network? Can excess capacity be re-sold or leased? • What is the funding mechanism? State Funding, Higher Ed funding, etc. • Are you already directly peering with other Regional Network? Please provide details. • Are you Internet2 member? What is your membership type? • Are you an NLR member? What is your membership type? 13) Are you associated with any other National, Regional, State or Local networks? Are there other smaller "rings" connected to your network? 14) Are you doing performing research directly through your organization? If so, what are the topics of interest to you? (Do not include research that you enable for Higher Ed. Community that you serve) Example: Measurement and Monitoring, Protocol Stack, etc.
Northeast Region **Completed States Timeline: Final Report—March 31st, 2006
New ideas… • Pricing models for end users • Disaster Recovery • Network Topology and Architecture • Challenges • Customizations • Hardware • Service Offered • Learning from neighboring communities • Education • Collaborations • Policy and Governance • Research collaborations – New Sub-group???
More ideas from 020706… • Approach Quilt with the survey and get their feedback. Verify that there are not substantial overlaps between Statenets and Quilt's work. Jim Williams and Paul Schopis will help coordinate a call between Statenets and the Quilt • Samples of various MoUs • Any further interest on repeats of Quilt workshops? • Potential interest in reviving the 4 quilt workshops on fiber network development • What is the “value add” proposition for various Statenets as seen (or not seen) by their constituents? • A general need to insure that data collected from surveys are secured. If there is any public interface there would be a need to de-sensitize the data • Statenets will send out the survey to everyone that was in the RON subcommittee meeting on 020706 • Staffing – Personnel aspect of running a RON • A lot of interest in the business/financial model for user connections to RONs, pricing structure
Deliverables • White Paper (Plan: March 31, 2006) • Central Repository of Data • One-Stop “help” for new RON projects • Common Glossary • Aligned with work done at The Quilt • Key contacts in every region
