  2. WorldCat Discovery Services • A new suite of cloud-based applications • Combines functionality of OCLC FirstSearch and WorldCat Local • Services will run in parallel during transition • WorldCat Discovery Services will replace legacy services over the next 18 months

  3. Central index • Bibliographic records in WorldCat • FirstSearch subscription databases • Article-level records • HathiTrust, ArticleFirst, MEDLINE, ERIC, JSTOR, OAIster • Licensed databases • ProQuest, Gale

  4. Remote database searching • Federated search • Search databases not included in the central index • Search results integrated with main results • (probably slower than central index alone)

  6. Discovery through: • WorldCat Discovery Services (individual) site • WorldCat.org • Partner sites: • Goodreads • Google Books • Blackboard • Wikipedia

  7. Improvements? • Interface • Mobile interface! • Ranking has higher emphasis on “library owned” than “relevance” • Content more prominent (less scrolling)

  8. Mobile interface • Interface adjusts automatically on mobile devices • Fewer options on screen • Text is larger and more readable • Options easier to select

  9. Electronic Resources • If we maintain the Knowledge base • Library’s resources listed first • Direct links to full-text • A-Z list

  10. Timeline • WorldCat Discovery Services (beta) available to FirstSearch subscribers April 2014 • In beta through December 2014 • (at this point, all features fully implemented)

  11. Concerns? • What were your concerns with WorldCat Local? • Are they addressed in WorldCat Discovery Services? • (If we don’t know, I will look into it!)
