1796 The Directory appoints Napoleon to lead an army against Austria and Sardinia (off Italy)
November 1799 Napoleon (with his troops) dissolved the Directory, replacing it with 3 Consuls—Napoleon, as First Consul, rules as a dictator
1800 France votes (plebiscite) on a new constitution giving Napoleon real power as First Consul
December 2 1804 Napoleon crowns himself Emperor of France.
1805 France is at war with Britain, Russia, Austria, and Sweden and win the Battle of Austerlitz (p. 666), loses the Battle of Trafalgar.
November 1806 Napoleon sets up a blockade of Britain called the Continental System – Britain then searches and taxes ships
1808 The French Empire is weakened by the Peninsular War.
June 1812 Napoleon and his army of 420,000 invade Russia.
Sept.-Oct. 1812 Napoleon’s army takes Moscow, which the Russians had burned and destroyed.
December 1812 Napoleon and his army of 10,000 (?) retreat out of Russia.
January 1814 Armies of Prussia and Russia lead troops into Paris.
April 1814 Napoleon accepts terms of surrender and gives up his throne, and is exiled to island of Elba.
March 1, 1815 Napoleon lands on France after escaping from Elba and becomes Emperor of France (again).
June 18, 1815 The Battle of Waterloo begins and Napoleon loses to British and Prussian forces.
1821 Napoleon dies in exile on St. Helena in the south Atlantic.
