Virus- • Living or not? • Contains DNA or RNA • Cannot reproduce without help of another cell. • How? • Attaches to cell’s membrane and injectsits DNA/RNA into the cell • codes for the production of the virus, taking over the cell’s functions • Eventually, cell explodes releasing many new viruses

  4. Living? • Living things must be able to: • REPRODUCE! • Since viruses cannot reproduce by themselves, they are NOT considered to be living by most scientists.

  6. What viruses do • HPV • Human papillomavirus • Many viruses thought to affect DNA that regulates cell division • Can lead to unrestricted cell division  cancer!!! • HPV vaccine prevents HPV, which MAY prevent cervical cancers

  7. Vaccine • Weakened virus injected into body • Allows immune system to recognize and kill virus. • immune system remembers the virus, and will kill stronger versions of it in the future. • CANNOT VACCINATE FOR BACTERIA

  8. Even Smaller? • Mad Cow’s Disease • Caused by Prions • NOT incapsulated like virus • No genetic material • Only proteins. • proteins can cause many diseases
