Ways to Compare &Contrastnonfiction vs. Fiction texts: Definition: • Nonfiction versus Fiction text Example: • compare and contrast: • a fictional portrayal of a time, with a historical account of the same time period • A fictional portrayal of a place, with a historical account of the same place. • A fictional portrayal of a character and a historical account of the same period

  5. Nonfiction vs. Fiction Texts A fictional portrayal of a place, with a historical account of the same place. Example: Out of the dust takes place in Oklahoma. The portrayal of the state can be compared and contrasted to a nonfiction text.

In reality, war is not so black and white

Ways to Compare &Contrast:Traditional vs. Modern texts Definition: • Analyze modern (current) versus traditional texts Examples: • Compare and contrast how a modern work of fiction draws in themes, patterns of events, or character types from myths, traditional stories, or religious works • Analyze how traditional stories are modernized • Example: Cinderella has been recreated numerous times: Ever After, A Cinderella story, Ella Enchanted, etc.

Strategies for comparing and contrasting • Annotate the texts as you read • Keep track of similarities and differences • Consider the author’s purpose for writing the text and how this may impact the information provided • Determine the focus of the passage • Note if any of the information in one text contradicts (goes against) another • Synthesize the information: look at more than one text to gain a more complete picture of a time or place • To synthesize: to combine parts or elements to make a whole
