  2. Miss Maudie • In chapter 5, we are introduced to the neighbor Miss Maudie She adds an important element to Scout growing up: She is teaching her to become a “lady”

  3. Maudie also discusses important motifs (recurring elements in the story) with Scout

  4. Blind Spots • The novel often brings up the idea of being able to see clearly or see something from another’s point of view • Maudie is trying to help Scout see/understand Boo Radley

  5. 2) Secrets • Everyone has secrets, things that they hide from the world. • Maudie discusses the Radley secrets with Scout. Boo has been psychologically abused by his family.

  6. 3) Hypocrites • Often people will claim to believe in one thing but act in a totally opposite manner • Maudie explains to us that Atticus is one of the few people who is not a hypocrite. He is the same inside and outside his house.
