Topic introduction comparison similar different Your opinion The structure of the passage
Topic introduction • Everybody has his or her friends. Some people like to choose friends who are different from themselves while others prefer those who are similar to themselves. Each of the choices has its advantages.
Comparison • When people have friends similar to themselves, they and their friends can chat, play, and do things together harmoniously. The result is that they all feel relaxed and can truly enjoy each other's company.
Comparison • When a person has friends different from himself, he can benefit from the contacts with different people. His friends may be different from him in character, education, occupation, or political and religious beliefs. From those friends, he can learn a lot of things that he has never experienced himself and he can also enjoy being with them when they know each other well.
Your opinions • Comparing the advantages of both cases, I think that it would be better for me to have both kinds of friends. In this way, I can have the best of both worlds. For instance, when I want to relax or when I am too tired to be careful about my speech and manner, I can stay with those friends who are like me. But, when I feel like it, it is also possible for me to stay with those who are different from me and learn something new.
Friends of different kinds • best friends • friends with whom you spend a lot of time and with whom you share all your thoughts and feelings.
Friends of different kinds • forever friends • friends that will always listen to you and try to help you, even if you disagree or if you are having a problem.
Friends of different kinds • school friends • friends who you see each other in school and you study and have fun together, but you may not know everything about each other.
Friends of different kinds • pen friends or pen pals • friends who you write friendly letters to, especially someone in another country who you have never met
Friends of different kinds • e-friends • friends who you talk to each other by e-mail or telephone. They live in different places, even across borders, and maybe you will never see them all your life.
Friends of different kinds • fair-weather friends • friends who only like you when you are rich or when you are popular. If you are feeling down or if you are having problem, fair-weather friends don’t want to spend time or talk with you.
What can be our friends besides human beings? • animals • objects • the environment
Unit 2 THE ENVIRONMENT the air, water, and land where people, animals, and plants live, and the way all these things depend on each other so that life can continue

rubbish Every day, people throw away a lot of rubbish. Everywhere we go, we can see piles of rubbish. When the rubbish gets burned, it gives off poisonous gases and awful smell. It is a big problem for the environment.
Air pollution The air in big cities is often made very dirty by factories. Millions of tons of waste and poisonous gases are sent into the air with the smoke. In big cities during cold winter months, many old people die from the polluted air. In places around big factories, trees and vegetables are often killed by the bad air.
Tree chopping People as well as the environment benefit a lot from trees. But in order to make more profits, people chop down a huge number of trees every year. When too many trees are cut down in an area, the environment is badly damaged. Floods and drought may often be caused.
Polluted water People in cities and towns produce large amounts of dirty water every day. In some places little is done to make the water clean before it goes into rivers, lakes and the sea. Even poisonous chemical waste from factories is poured into rivers, which kills millions of fish.
sandstorm Sandstorms are caused by strong winds blowing over loose soil or sand. Sandstorms bring damaging effects to the environment. The air quality often becomes rather terrible and the land and air transportation will seriously be affected. Sandstorms result from the overuse of natural resources, such as cutting down too many trees and opening up too much land for raising cattle.
Forest fire Forest fires are natural or human-caused fires that burn large areas of trees. Most forest fires result from human carelessness, such as throwing away lighted cigarettes or cooking meals. Weather conditions can also cause forest fire, like high temperature or lightning. Forest fires can spread quickly with the wind and cause great damage to the environment.
