When rocks undergo chemical changes (the minerals that make up the rock change) • Occurs due to: • Water (dissolves minerals in the rocks) • Oxygen (rocks containing iron go through oxidation, producing rust) • Acids (acid rain, other sources) – quickly weathers rocks Chemical Weathering
Depends on: • Size - Smaller pieces of rock weather faster (more surface area) • Type of rock – different rocks contain different minerals that weather at different rates • Climate – wet climates and warm climates cause faster weathering Rate of Weathering
