Section 4-1 The Development of a New Atomic Model By: Elva, Lee Ann, Elizabeth, Lorena, and Joanna Niels Bohr Rutherford
Properties of Light • The Rutherford model was an improvement but was incomplete. It didn’t explain where the atom’s negatively charged electrons are located in the space surrounding its positively charged nucleus. • Electromagnetic radiation: form of energy that has wavelike behavior • when traveling through space. • Electromagnetic radiation has a constant speed of 3.0 X 108 mps (m/s) • Electromagnetic spectrum: all the • forms of electromagnetic radiation.
Rutherford Model Electromagnetic Spectrum
Properties of Light Cont. • Wavelength(λ): the distance between corresponding point on adjacent waves. • Unit for wavelength-meter, centimeter, nanometer (1nm=1x10-9m) • Frequency & Wavelength equation- C=גv • C is speed of light, ג wavelength of electromagnetic wave, v is frequency of electromagnetic wave.
The Photoelectric Effect • Photoelectric effect- emission of electrons from metal when light shines on metal. • Quantum-minimum quantity of energy that can be lost or gained by an atom.
The Photoelectric Effect Cont. • Max Planck proposed the following equation: E=hv ( E is energy in joules, v is frequency of radiation, and h is physical constant.) • Ground state is the lowest energy state of atom. • Excited state-a state in which an atom has a higher potential energy than it has in its ground state.
The Photoelectric Effect Cont. • Line-emission spectrum- bands of light • Continuous spectrum- emission of continuous range of frequencies of electromagnetic radiation.
1931-Bohr Model of the Hydrogen Atom • Danish physicist Niels Bohr solved the puzzle of the hydrogen-atom spectrum. • He proposed a model of hydrogen which links the atom’s electron with photon emission.
