Domestic Abuse • 1 in 4 women will become the victim of domestic abuse • On average there will be 35 incidents of domestic abuse before a call is made for help • 2 women a week are killed by a partner or former partner • Elder abuse is more widespread in Wales than anywhere else in the UK • It affects 6 per cent of older people in Wales, compared to 4.3 per cent in Scotland, 3.9 per cent in England and 3 per cent in Northern Ireland. • Based on population estimates, it is believed this equates to 39,000 older people in Wales who are being abused in their own home.
What is Domestic Abuse? The shared ACPO and government definition of domestic violence is: ‘Any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (psychological,physical,sexual, financial or emotional) between adults, aged 18 and over, who are or have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender and sexuality.’ (Family members are defined as mother, father, son, daughter, brother, sister and grandparents, whether directly related, in-laws or step-family.) Domestic abuse is defined in the All Wales Strategy on Domestic Abuse as: ‘The use of physical and/or emotional abuse or violence, including undermining of self confidence, sexual violence or the threat of violence, by a person who is or has been in a close relationship.

Domestic Abuse and Older Women • Domestic abuse is experienced by women of all ages • Domestic abuse against older women may be long term • Older women may have a different perception of domestic abuse and may not recognise it • Older women are less likely to report domestic abuse • Older women are more likely to remain with a perpetrator of abuse • The impact on older victims of domestic abuse is that they can suffer from chronic physical problems, mental health issues and disability
Other Factors • Mental capacity • Dementia • Diagnosed cases in Wales 2010 – 15,389 • Estimated cases in Wales 2010 - 42,722 • US research regarding the prevalence of domestic abuse with dementia to be between 5.4 and 11.9% • This would equate to between 2300 and 5000 victims in Wales
