Transformations and Similarity Math 8: Unit 2 Mrs. Tyrpak
Coordinate Plane Today we are going to experiment with combinations of transformations within the topic of similarity. We are going to be working with 2 shapes: rectangle and a triangle. If you have access to scissors you can make your own shapes to match mine.
Experiment #1 • Place the rectangle on a coordinate plane and sketch the shape and label the vertices. • Translate the figure 2 units down, 3 units the right, and dilate the figure by a scale factor of 2. • Are the figures similar?
Experiment #2 • Place the triangle on the coordinate plane and sketch and label. • Rotate the figure 180 degrees around the point (0,0), and dilate by a scale factor of • Are the figures similar?
Figures and Similarity We can also determine if two figures are similar if the relationship between the two can be described by a series of transformations.
Thanks for your attention! Don’t forget to complete your practice and application worksheets. Remember geometry is VERY visual, so whenever possible sketch a picture of what is going on and label EVERYTHING you know
