  1. Chapter 8: A Growing Nation How did the growth in particular affect people in the various regions?

  2. Canada- 1873 Canada Grew from A union of Four Provinces to one of the largest Nations in The World

  3. How Did Canada Acquire so much Land? Three factors that helped Canada include the North West Territories, Manitoba, British Colombia and Prince Edward Island: • Land purchases • Negotiations • Treaties In 1867, Canada arranged to buy Rupert's land from the Hudson’s Bay company This lead to multiple disputes with the First Nations. Did the HBC have the rights to sell this land?

  4. British Columbia join Confederation Economic distress in British Columbia was caused by the surge in population after gold was discovered—the government put expensive services in place for settlers for examples: roads etc. The gold rush ended but the colony still had to repay their debts. Some colonists thought it would be smart to join British Colombia but others thought confederation would be better. In 1871—British Columbia agreed to join confederation After Canada offered to pay British Columbians debt and offer the railway to span from Pacific to Atlantic.

  5. Prince Edward Island Join Confederation • Prince Edward Island– the colony said no to confederation but by 1873 the colony was not doing as well. • Canada granted PEI an offer to pay off railway debt, providing freedom from land owners and a guaranteed a steamship service to mainland. They joined 1873.

  6. Treaties with the First Nations in The West • After the North West Territories were Canada wanted more settlers to come and wanted to join a TransCanada railway system. • Arrangements had to be made for First Nations • Treaties with First Nations: covered three points: • Some lands would be reserved for First Nations only • $$ would be given from government each year for education, farming supplies and famine • Live peacefully
