Gold Coast Institute of TAFEQueensland's 2007 Public Training Provider of the Year Presentation by Kate Deacon School Representatives
Introduction By students completing Year 12, they have given themselves the best possible foundation for success in the future. Further education & training opportunities will build on their investment to allow them to prosper & develop their working life. Australia is becoming a qualification orientated society and employees will need to be qualified to obtain certain positions or further their career. There is a strong link between further education and training & the chances of finding the job you want. Increasing your chances of finding the job that interests you will depend on the education & training choices your students make now.
What is VET? The main difference between vocational education & training (TAFE) studies & university is that vocational institutions are generally more closely linked to the needs of business and industry. This means most courses are very practical & based on skills you will need at work. TAFE is the largest provider of post-secondary education and training in Australia. TAFE institutions have links with universities, and TAFE qualifications can provide the foundation for progressing to degree courses and in most cases a diploma qualification will obtain one year of credit transfers.

How do the schools programs work? Gold Coast Institute of TAFE (GCIT) offers the opportunity for high school students in year 10 (must be 14 years and 9 months), year 11 and year 12 to attend Gold Coast Institute of TAFE one day a week during the school term over one or two years to complete a Certificate program. How do students participate in the programs? Study should be identified in the SET plan. Students seeking to secure their placement in outlined programs can only do so via enrolment after 1 October 2008. Positions in courses cannot be held nor reserved, and placement is limited in all programs. Interested participants must complete the New Student Details form at the back of the booklet and obtain a letter of endorsement from their school representative (VET co-ordinator, Deputy Principal etc). Participants can enrol in person at our Customer Service counters at our Ashmore, Southport or Coolangatta campuses. Payment will be required at time of enrolment.
What are the options after Year 12? For Year 12 school leavers, post-school study generally means vocational education and training (TAFE) or university. People tend to know more about university courses than they do about TAFE although in most fields of study you’ll find both university and TAFE courses to choose from. Traditionally, TAFE delivers education and training more closely linked to the needs of work and industry.
It’s all about what will work for your students The most important consideration is for the student to do the kind of course that interests them. It is much easier to complete a course successfully if it is something they enjoy and that is why GCIT offers the Direct Entry/Scholarship program.
Courses @ GCIT • Accounting, Administration, Frontline Management, Business (Marketing, Advertising, Management, Human Resources) • Justice, Community Welfare, Children Services • Information Technology, Multimedia, Screen, Graphic Design • Building, Project Management, Building Design (Architecture), Interior Technology • Massage, Naturopathy, Nutritional Medicine, Western Herbal Medicine • Nursing, Sport, Fitness • Music (performance), Music (technical production) • Hair, Beauty, Fashion • Tourism, Hospitality & Event Management • Horticulture • Real Estate, Property Investment, Body Corporate Management • Trades (pre-apprenticeships)
University Articulation As a TAFE diploma graduate, you can continue your studies by articulation/pathways to university and obtain credit transfers to reduce the time it takes to complete your degree. (in most cases a year equivalence) We have developed strong links with universities & credit transfer arrangements are in place between GCIT & universities such as: Griffith University, Bond University, Southern Cross University, University of Southern Queensland, Central Queensland University, James Cook University, Queensland University of Technology & Australian Catholic University. Students who enter university via the TAFE pathway have a higher completion rate than those students who enter university directly from high school. In 2007 TAFE graduates had a 87% completion rate on university compared with the 34% completion rate for students going directly from high school to university
