Commitments and goals The governments of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Republic of Palau, the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Territory of Guam committed: to effectively conserve at least 30% of the near-shore marine resourcesand20% of the terrestrial resources across Micronesia by 2020

Progress in Conservation Measures • Identified baseline of existing areas under some form of management • Established standardized regional monitoring methods to assess management effectiveness and training local teams in data collection and analysis • MC regional database is being piloted-PALARIS is leading this effort
Key advantages of Challenge approach • Opportunity to go beyond “paper parks”: • Ensure long-term sustainability, management effectiveness • Add new sites faster • Better manage big threats outside protected areas (e.g. fisheries, coastal development, climate change, invasive species…) • Opportunity for major commitment of funds / enhanced regional collaboration to maximize resources, providing strong foundation to scale-up and leverage learning (NOAA, DOI, GEF, German BMU, USFS, Packard Foundation, CEPF, TNC, CI, NaturalEquity, AusAID, and others…)
Focusing on watershed management • Laolao Bay project CNMI 30% NE Tinian coast Tachogna Tinian LaoLao Bay Goal Garapan watershed Current 0% 2006 TIME 2020
Executive Order supporting the MC –directing agencies to support conservation efforts • Implementing Piti-Asan Watershed Conservation Action Plan and Rare Campaign to reduce wildland fires Guam
Atoll Vulnerability Assessment completed • Watershed partnerships developed FSM
RMI Community-based planning process
Implemented a $15 Green Fee for PAN • Collaborated with PEACE org. and submitted a grant application to develop a “PAN Communications Strategy” • Proposed new “Division of Protected Areas Network” within the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment & Tourism Palau
