Scene i • New castle = Forres • Macbeth invites Banquo to eat, Macbeth knows he is smart and is afraid he will uncover his murder • He says that Banquo’s children will become kings because he will have no children of his own • Orders the murders to kill Banquo, challenges their manhood
Scene ii • Fleance = Banquo’s son • Lady Macbeth says we should kill Banquo • She is unaware of Macbeth’s plan • “Nought’s had all’s spent, where our desire is got without content: Tis safer to be that which we destroy than by destruction dwell in doubtful joy.” – L. Macbeth (she is not getting what she wanted out of being queen, worried about getting caught). • Have nightmares, rather be dead than he could sleep • “O, full of scorpions is my mind, dear wife!”
Scene iii • Banquo gets murdered • Fleance escapes
Scene iv • The murders report to Macbeth • Have a dinner with noblemen of the country • Macduff goes to England to get Malcolm (Macbeth is humiliated) • “I am in blood stepped in so far that, should I wade no more, returning tedious as go over.”
Scene v • Hecate mad the witches made predictions without her
Scene VI • Macduff gets help from Siward (old) – the commander of English forces, the Earl of Northumberland, and his son Siward. • War brewing
