Who and What? • large cities such as Austin, Boston, Charlotte, Jefferson County, Miami-Dade, Atlanta, Houston, and New York City. • The science questions measured students’ knowledge of physical science, life science, and earth and space sciences. • The results are reported as average scores on a 0–300 scale and as percentages of students performing at or above three achievement levels - basic, proficient and advanced.
Rankings • The Detroit Public Schools has posted the worst science scores among 17 large cities that took part in the 2009 Trial Urban District assessment. • It is the third subject that DPS fourth- and eighth -grade scores ranked last for 2009. • The DPS scores ranked last on the reading test. • The DPS math scores ranked the worst in the nation in the history of the test.
Report Card • The average science score for DPS fourth graders was 111 out of 300, compared to an average score of 135 among large cities and a national average of 149. • An eighth-grade average score was 113, compared to 134 among the urban districts and the national average score of 140.
DPS response… • School district said the students had trouble reading the complex test questions. • DPS had decided to lunch the DPS Reading Corps. • More than 5,700 metro area adults have signed up for the Reading Corps to help tutor preschool students.
