Hydro energy is energy is taken from water and converted into electricity. The most common method of using energy from water is a hydroelectric dam, where water coming down through a dam causes turbines to rotate which runs the generator.
The use of hydro power was discovered by the Ancient Greeks. They use a water wheel to grind wheat into flour and grinding corn more than 2,000 years ago. Besides grinding flour , the wheels were also used to saw wood.
Hydropower energy Transfer Step 1: A hydroelectric power plant uses the force of falling water from a reservoir to turn a turbine that drives a generator.
Step 2: An exciter powers the turbine.
Step 3: As the turbine and its magnetic field turn, an electric charge is created in the generator.
Step 4: A transformer increases the voltage of the current coming from the starter.
Advantages of Hydropower. Hydropower plants have a Long life and low operating cost. It is also clean, domestic and renewable source of energy. In hydropower plants the source of energy is not destroyed unlike fossil fuel electricity.
Disadvantages of Hydropower Hydropower plants have high set up cost. There is a long construction period and flooding They can also affect fish and wildlife habitats.
Careers with Hydropower. Hydroelectric Operations Maintenance Workers are responsible for the preventive care, inspection, maintenance, and repair of water-powered electrical generators. This applies to a wide range of equipment, including electric motors, diesel engines, switch gears, pumps and hydraulics, water transmission systems, and flood channels
