  2. Miami History • Miami was founded in 1809 • Miami was named for the Miami Indian Tribe that inhabited the area now known as the Miami Valley Region of Ohio • It was the 7th public college founded in the US

  3. Miami History • During the Civil War the University was closed because the students had left to fight in the war • It was closed from 1873 - 1875 • Benjamin Harrison (23rd President of the United States) graduated from Miami in 1852 • The University Honors & Scholars program has the Harrison Scholar program awarded to select students each year.

  4. Miami University and the Miami Tribe • The Miami River Valley and Miami University is named after the Miami Indian Tribe • The Miami Tribe was forcefully removed from the area in 1846 • Bobbe Burke is the Coordinator of Relations/Activities with the Miami Tribe • Myaamia Project
