  2. History • The Maori people arrived in New Zealand in the tenth century AD. • They brought many things with them including animals and food. • The Maori hunted the flightless bird, the Moa to extinction.

  3. History • The first European to discover New Zealand was Dutch. His name was Abel Tasman. He found New Zealand on the 13th of December 1642. • He called the land New Zealand after a place in Holland. • Abel Tasman never actually set foot on New Zealand. He only sailed into New Zealand waters.

  4. Geography • New Zealand is a size of 268,680 square kilometres making it bigger than Britain but smaller than Japan. • Mount Cook is the tallest mountain in New Zealand. It is 3754 metres tall.

  5. geography • The longest river in New Zealand is the Waikato river which is 425km. The river Shannon is only 386km. • The largest lake is Lake Taupo which is 616 square kilometres. Lough Neagh is only 383 square kilometres.

  6. Sport • Netball, soccer, rugby, golf and cricket are all popular sports in New Zealand. • Netball is the most popular sport for women and soccer is most popular for men.

  7. Rugby • The New Zealand rugby team are nicknamed the All Blacks. They do the Haka before international matches. • New Zealand bet France 8-7 in the world cup final 2011. This is the first time they have won a world cup in 24 years.

  8. Food • The Maori were from Polynesia. They brought sweet potatoes, dogs and rats which they ate. • Pavlova: Pavlova is a desert with a meringue base and cream and fruit on top. It was created in honour of Anna Pavlova a Russian ballerina. • Anzac Biscuit: This is a biscuit made many ingredients including oats and sugar.

  9. Monarchy • The queen of New Zealand is queen Elizabeth II. She is also queen of many countries including Australia and England. Her coronation was in 1953.
