Definitions Sexual Harassment: Harassment (typically of a woman) in a workplace, or other professional or social situation, involving the making of unwanted sexual advances or obscene remarks Domestic Violence: violence or physical abuse directed toward your spouse or domestic partner; usually violence by men against women
Stats and Facts • Quid pro quo (equal exchange) harassment – “this for that” “what’s in it for me” • Only 5-15% report the harassment • Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women—more than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined. • Harassments and abuse is done usually by someone they know
I-Messages 3 Parts to an I-Message • How do you feel • When do you feel it • Why do you feel it “I feel disrespected when you put me down in front of our friends because it makes me feel like we are not equals” Journal Topic: Violence I-Messages Write up 3 hypothetical I-messages that could be used towards someone that you feel will/has harassed or abused you.
Illinois Domestic Violence Laws • Any person who is licensed, certified or otherwise authorized by the law of this State to administer health care in the ordinary course of business or practice of a profession shall offer to a person suspected to be a victim of abuse immediate and adequate information regarding services available to victims of abuse. • Mandatory Reporting: 20 ILCS 2630/3.2 requires any person conducting or operating a medical facility, or any physician or nurse, to report treatment of injuries to local law enforcement when it reasonably appears that the person requesting treatment has suffered from an injury caused by the discharge of a firearm or sustained in the commission of, or as the victim of, a criminal offense.
Surveys… • A national survey found that 1 in 11 high school students say that they have been hit, slapped, or hurt on purpose by their boyfriend or girlfriend in the past year. • 1 in 11 also reported that they have been forced to have sexual intercourse when they did not want to. • Far greater numbers (96%) report emotional and psychological abuse in their dating relationships. • It is HIGHLY likely that someone you know has experienced teen dating violence first hand!!!
Types of Abuse Physical Abuse Psychological/ Emotional Abuse Sexual Abuse
Physical Abuse • Hitting • Slapping • Punching • Shoving • Kicking • Biting • Hair Pulling • Includes the use of a weapon!
Psychological/ Emotional Abuse • If a boyfriend or girlfriend: • Humiliates you • Insults you • Swears at you • Attempts to control your activities • Tries to destroy your self esteem • Tries to isolate you from family and friends • Threatens you with violence
Sexual Abuse • The terms that refers to the forced or unwanted sexual activity or rape. • It could also be considered sexual abuse to coerce or pressure someone to engage in sexual activity with someone who is under the influence or drugs or alcohol.
What can you Do? • Know the early warning signs when you’re in a relationship that could become violent. • If you are in a violent or potentially violent relationship, take the following steps: • Make a plan to get help! • Realize that the violence will not stop or go away.
What Else… • Be on the lookout for friends that may be in violent relationships • Signs to look for: • Change in style of appearance • Seem to lose confidence in themselves • Difficulty making choices • Stopping spending time with family and friends • Begin to fail classes and or quit school • Turn to using drugs or alcohol • Unexplainable crying or avoidance

Debate Time!!! Get your partici”pants” on and get ready to debate! We will split up into 2 groups. • One group will plan an argument for a law mandating healthcare providers to report any case of physical abuse to authorities. • The other group will form an argument/case against a law mandating healthcare providers to report any case of physical abuse to authorities. (this doesn’t mean they can’t, just not required by law)
Debate Time!!! • EACH person must contribute at least one substantial comment to the debate. • Write up with 3 detailed arguments for your side. • Write up 3 opposing arguments you think the other side will bring up and also write how you will respond to them!
