Abstruse • This is a photograph of a collection of sophisticated works and reference material on highly technical topics. The subject matter being discussed in the books is complex and can be confusing to many. A profound philosophical inquiry or a topic that is difficult to comprehend is considered abstruse. Jaclyn Melvin
Absurd • This photograph of a front yard filled with homemade artwork, seasonal decorations, propaganda signs, and garbage can be considered an absurd way to maintain your home in a residential neighborhood. The fact that it is unkempt can be derisive to the neighbors, and many would find the inflammatory words highly inappropriate. Sometimes people go to absurd measures to make a point and to call attention to themselves or a cause. Jaclyn Melvin
Bedlam • This photograph of chaotic traffic in a crowded shopping center illustrates bedlam. The warm weather mixed with early holiday sales made for chaos and confusion in the parking lots and intersections. The honking horns only added to the disorder and disruption. Jaclyn Melvin
Belie • This photograph shows a large, sparkling necklace that contradicts the discount price attributed to it. Costume jewelry is often meant to look expensive and can give the false impression that it is made of precious metal or genuine stones. Many department stores stay in business by selling goods that belie their real quality. Jaclyn Melvin
Cacophony • This photograph of a trio of leaf blowers in use accompanied by a large lawnmower exemplifies the word cacophony. The loud, grating motors that operate at high decibels are unpleasant and can be painful to the human ear. Earplugs are often required by machinery that causes cacophony. Jaclyn Melvin
Callous • This photograph of a car parked illegally and taking up multiple spots reserved for the handicapped shows a callous act. The person who parked this van is focused on their own needs and insensitive to the rights of those with special needs. It is callous to disrespect those who are suffering and disabled. Jaclyn Melvin
Debilitate • This photograph taken inside a hospital corridor refers to things that can debilitate a person. Having surgery, experiencing some type of trauma, cardiac conditions, or spending a period of time in an ICU unit can debilitate, or weaken, someone. One can frequently see elderly, debilitated patients being pushed in wheelchairs. Jaclyn Melvin
Debutante • This photograph of a tiara is an example of something that a debutante wears to the ball. Formal gowns, jewelry, gloves, and upswept hair-dos are commonplace for a girl who is making her formal debut into society. Debutantes may wear tiaras in order to look regal or fashionable. Jaclyn Melvin
Decorum • This photograph of signs hanging on a library door denotes what type of behavior or decorum is expected from patrons. Quieting cell phones and leaving household pets outside the facility is expected. Without a sense of decorum, the quiet library atmosphere would be lost, and those studying or reading would be disturbed. Jaclyn Melvin
Edifice • This photograph of Squire's Castle, which is part of the Cleveland Metroparks in Willoughby Hills, is an example of an edifice. Its large size, elaborate brickwork, and turrets make it an impressive structure. Its history and unique architecture make it an interesting edifice. Jaclyn Melvin
