E N D
Good morning fellow classmates. My name is Gloria Monty and with me here are members of my group. To my left are Cassie Klatka and Mia Zarembski. And to my right is Kristen Lavoie. Our presentation today is on one of the most powerful women in the world today: Angela Dorothea Merkel. On November 22nd 2005, Angela Merkel a member of the Christian Democratic Union was elected the first female Chancellor of Germany. She is also the first East German to hold this office. Lawmakers voted 397-202 with 12 abstentions making Merkel the eighth German leader since World War II. On congratulating her, former Chancellor Schroeder whom she succeeded said, • “Dear Mrs. Merkel, you are the first democratically elected female head of government in Germany”, Parliament President Norbert Lammert said “This is a strong signal for women and certainly for some men, too
Her Early Life Born in Hamburg on July 17 1954, Angela Dorothea Kasner is the oldest of Horst and HerlindKasner’s three children. Her father, a Protestant clergyman moved to East Germany when she was three years old. At a young age the Chancellor showed her leadership skills by becoming a district board representative and secretary of the Agitprop- the agitation and propaganda campaign of the youth movement. She attended the University of Leipzig where she studied physics and earned a PhD in physics. In 1977 Angela Kasner married Ulrich Merkel but the marriage ended in a divorce in 1982. She is currently married to Joachim Sauer, a Chemistry professor from Berlin.
Her Political Life • Chancellor Merkel with former Chancellor Kohl
Merkel entered politics for the first time in 1989. This was after the fall of the Berlin Wall. She joined East Germany’s Democratic Party “DemokratischerAufbruchfirst”. In the first and only democratic election held in East Germany, she was elected the deputy spokesperson for the new government. She was elected to the Bundestag (the German Parliament) in the first post-unification democratic elections. She was later appointed to be Minister for Women and Youth and in 1994 she became Minister for Environment and Reactor, a post which served as the foundation for her political career. And now I will hand over the presentation to the rest of my team members who will give a more detailed background on the Chancellor’s career on these levels A) Her personal background and how she came into power B) Insights into the historical and social context in which she operates C) What she stands for or her advocacies. Examples will be her stand on peace, ethics and women’s issues D) What her leadership style is. Her strength and her weaknesses.
