Paragraph of Explanation Attribution Theory Attribution Theory is based on a person’s ability to help create and insure positive self-perception. People will attribute their success based on their efforts and abilities, while their failures are attributed to outside or environmental factors or situations that are out of their personal control. The basic principle of attribution theory as it applies to motivation is that a person's own perceptions or attributions for success or failure determine the amount of effort the person will expend on that activity in the future. (http://education.calumet.purdue.edu/vockell/edPsybook/Edpsy5/edpsy5_attribution.htm) There are four factors related to attribution theory that influence motivation: Ability, Difficulty, effort & luck. Our ad for the Los Angeles Clippers illustrates the Theory of Attribution by exhibiting the excitement and success from the fans perspective. The graphic demonstrates what it is like to actively be part of the Clippers game, and personalizes the effect of a winning game to the personal feeling of winning and accomplishment. In contrast, the text/copy reminds the fans that there are ups and downs in every game. What type of fan will you be? This covering both the positive and negative elements of the Theory of Attribution.
