2. Introduction • Cosmetology is not just hair styling, it is that plus skincare and makeup. I am personally more interested in the makeup aspect of this career. My hair dresser got me interested in this career by telling me all about her experience with schooling and having her own business. I will have to study to be able to cut and style hair, know how the skin works, and what makeup looks good on all people. I would love to eventually own my own business one day also.

4. Working Conditions • This career is both physical and mental. It is physical because you actually have to touch the person you’re working on, and it contributes to their physical attributes. It is mental because you have to know what looks good on someone’s skin tone or hair. • This is mostly an indoor career because most people own their own salons. • If you work in a salon at first, the hours would vary by when clients make their appointments. • The environment is what you make it. You have your own work station, and you have to clean it after every appointment.

5. Training, Qualifications, Advancement • The type of education you need as a cosmetologist depends on the type of work you're interested in doing. As a cosmetologist, you can be a hairstylist, beautician, makeup artist or nail technician. • To obtain a license for cosmetology, most states require a completed state-licensed cosmetology program through a community college or vocational school. This could last nine months or more. • I plan on going through either the Gallery College of Beauty here in Michigan or the Carsten Institute of Cosmetology in New York. • In high school, I can take an off-campus cosmetology class to prepare me for college courses.

6. Job Outlook/Employment • The employment change from 2010-2020 will be 100,900. • The job outlook from 2010-2020 is 14%, about average. • If I were to become a cosmetologist, my desired workplace would have to be either New York City or Chicago.

7. Earnings • My biggest lifestyle goal is to own my own salon and makeup company. • Average earnings- $22,500 per year, $10.82 per hour. • Coming out of college, this would be my ideal earnings, but I eventually want to own a business so that amount would go up. • My first purchase with my earnings would either be an apartment or a car.

8. Related Occupation • My back up career would have to be being a photographer. It is my second passion, and even hope to tie it into my first career choice. The working conditions are what you make them. I would hope to photograph celebrities or people for their weddings. I would have to take classes in a community college, or major college if I wanted to. The earnings are $29,130 per year, and $14.00 per hour.

9. Summary • I feel very confident in being able to accomplish my goals with becoming a cosmetologist. I am taking classes in high school to prepare me for this. One thing that I look forward to the most would have to be doing what I love and what I’m good at, as well as making friendships with clients. One thing that I am not looking forward to is having to keep up with all of the trends and having to adapt to them. I think all of the schooling will keep my modern and fresh with the trends so it will be worth it. I want to make people feel comfortable and confident with who they really are. I love working with people directly, and owning my own business one day will give me the chance to become personal with all of my future clients. If cosmetology doesn’t work out, photography will be my for sure second option.
