  1. Making Statistics Read-ble and Vizi-ble Rebecca Pierce & Robin Rufatto Ball State University eCOTS May 2012

  2. Pilot Study Program • Why? • Reduce costs • Alternative way to access course materials • Liberal Arts Math Course • Major statistics component • Taught primarily by mathematicians • Two innovations • Courseload • ViziSwap

  3. CourseloadStudent Benefits • Up to a 70% reduction in the cost of textbooks • Materials accessible through any web-based device • Laptops • iPads • Android devices • Smartphones

  4. CourseloadInstructor Benefits • Flexible design • Highlighting • Embedding notes • Sharing annotations • Digital platform makes it easier • Aggregate content from multiple sources • Take better advantage of interactive content • Offers insight into how students are interacting with the materials

  5. ViziSwap • An interactive digital tool used to introduce students to basic statistical • Vocabulary • Processes • Intended for use with any liberal arts mathematics or statistics textbook

  6. Example Lesson

  7. Developing ViziSwap • Determined the objectives which could be taught effectively using a digital, interactive format • Created a short video lecture and step-by-step demonstration of examples • Provided opportunity for students to apply the concepts with immediate feedback • Provided an assignment to be submitted digitally to the instructor for grading after appropriate interactive practice

  8. Appropriate Use & Benefits • Assign a lesson or a portion of a lesson for students to complete outside of class • Students access segments of the lesson that are most useful to them • More time will be available for discussing topics in greater depth and for solving more complex problems using the skills learned from ViziSwap • When used with online classes, students have a central location where they can look for explanations and demonstrations

  9. Availability • Courseload • Currently in use at Indiana University • http://www.courseload.com/ • ViziSwap • Beta testing underway • Scheduled for release Fall 2012 • Contact Us at • rpierce@bsu.edu • rrrufatto@bsu.edu
