Back at the time of the crusades the dragon was a symbol for the devil.
The Devil is the evil in the World. A plague bearing, fire breathing, dragon made a good symbol for the Devil.
Many centuries after George’s death King Richard of England took lots of men to conquer Palestine. The army used a red cross on a white background as a way of identifying themselves.
The King and his army heard the story of St George fighting the devil and were inspired by it. The story and the red cross became linked in the King’s, and his soldiers’ minds.
The red cross on a white background became known as the ‘St. George Flag’.
St. George never came to England but he was a brave Christian who died for his faith. We should be inspired by his bravery and proud of our Patron Saint.
