BATOS System Characteristics Automatic Weather Station BATOS II is composed by: • ultrasonic anemometer • air temperature and humidity sensor • pressure sensor • surface temperature sensor • gyro compass • NMEA output (5s) Pressure, humidity, air and sea surface temperature and wind are measured every hour and automatic transmitted to the GTS. NMEA meteo data are collected, integrated with nav data and uploaded onshore every 5-10 minutes by ISMAR software DAPHNE BATOS data must be complemented with visual obervations of current weather conditions, sea state and cloud cover made at synoptic hours by volunteer scientific personnel on board the R/V Urania Combination on automatic measurements and visual measurements allow to have the first complite weather station over the MEDITERRANEAN Sea
BATOS istallation & CNR-MF Agreement: CNR and Meteo-France discussed the possibility to install the BATOS System on board the Urania at the end of 2009. This required to define both the technical solution and the legal terms of CNR-MFagreement. A CNR-MF task team was established between CNR and MF. CNR personnel involved: • M. Dibitetto (head of CNR Operative Program Office) representing the CNR President for the definition of the CNR-Meteo-France Agreement • R. Santoleri (CNR-ISAC) scientific interface between CNR-Meteo-France- MOON • G. Bortoluzzi (CNR-ISMAR) technical interface for the installation of instrument Meteo-France personnel involved: • F. BATOS istallation & CNR-MF Agreement: CNR and Meteo-France organized a preliminary visit of MF technician on board Urania to define the feasibility of the BATOS installation and of the technical details of the installation. The visit took place the 5 February 2010. MF & CNR personel were on board Urania 5 February 2010 and decided where to install the istruments The definition of legal Agreement between CNR&MF required long discussion. This agreement was finally signed the 9° Februry 2011 The 8 March 2011 the installation of BATOS started in Venice with ship in dry dock, and ended 10th march. OPEN PROBLEMS AND IMPROVEMENTS NMEA OUTPUT POOR RESOLUTION (lat, lon, wind) NMEA OUTPUT DEACTIVATED WHEN IN 'PORT' WHILE DOING OPERATIONS IN STATIONS AT SEA HIGH RESOLUTION DATA MASKING AND DISSEMINATION WE HAVE 4 MOORED BUOYS AND A PLATFORM TRANSMITTING DATA IN REAL TIME. With the contribution of many people (Crew and technicians of Urania, ship's owners, technicians of METEOFRANCE, G.Stanghellini of ISMAR, ISMAR and CNR responsibles) And thank to Pierre Blouch, N.Pinardi and E-SURFMAR
