Sheriff’s Lt. Demoted, Suspended for Cheating on College Courses
Your Agency Here After a three-month investigation, the YOUR SHERIFF demoted YOUR LIEUTENANT to the rank of Deputy after it was found that he ordered on-duty Sheriff’s Office employees to help him with his online college courses. The investigation revealed that he had employees write papers, log in to online courses under his user name and password to complete discussions and assignments, and take quizzes and exams. The Lieutenant was also suspended without pay for two weeks.

What should your policy include? • Training Courses • All college course inclusions • Registration procedures • Payment considerations • Prepayment is normally required • Procedures for non-completion • Reimbursement • Penalties • Oversight • Supervisory oversight of online classes • Periodic reports
Investigations • Investigatory tools • Authorize investigations • Require disclosure of user names, passwords, other logins • Require submission of assignments on demand • Require disclosure of instructor contact information, authorize contact with instructors and schools • Train Internal Affairs to investigate these cases
It’s a New World! • Online learning presents a new paradigm for learning • Cheating is going to happen • Public opinion is important • Agencies must have the tools to do the investigations and assign appropriate sanctions
