NCSSE Standard 1 Understanding that schools ideally prepare students for an unseen but not altogether unpredictable future, the leader creates a climate of inquiry that challenges the school community to continually re-purpose itself by building on its core values and beliefs about its preferred future and then developing a pathway to reach it.

  10. Activity # 2: Core Beliefs Assign a note taker Using a “round robin” order complete the table below regarding your school’s shared core beliefs -Richard DuFour

  11. Your Core Beliefs should DRIVE your Vision: -Vision instills an organization with a sense of direction (DuFour and Eaker, 1998, p. 62). -A shared vision is a shared image of what you desire your school to look like in the future” (Roberts and Pruit, 2003, p. 30).

VISION STATEMENT EXAMPLES • Ford Early 1900s: Democratize the automobile • Sears To be the preferred and most trusted resource for the products and services that enhance home and family life. • Avon To be the company that best understands and satisfies the product, service and self- fulfillment needs of women – globally. • School: All children are academically successful and prepared for a globally competitive work force.

  14. Vision: Time: Talks about the organization's future Function: It lists where the organization sees itself some years from now. For employees, it gives direction about how they are expected to behave and inspires them to give their best. It shapes customers' understanding of why they should work with the organization.   15. Whole Group Activity # 3: Sample Vision VISION STATEMENT FOR KHS: Our KHS learning community is passionate about educational success. All members of our learning community have responsibilities and share a collective commitment. Using the table on activity #3, discussHOW the sample vision addresses the concepts of “time, function, and what the sample school is about”?

  17. How will we address behavioral expectations? “All decisions will benefit all involved stakeholders fairly and equitably.” How can I get Billy engaged? Examples: How do I address Ms. Smith’s continual tardies? A clear vision serves as a filter for the daily decisions staff members must make. How will we address test scores?

Working individually, take 3 minutes to answer the questions below. • Describe the school you are trying to create? • What would your school look like if it were a great place for students? What would it look like if it were a great place for teachers? • Next choose a recorder and “round robin” your responses (do not repeat responses that have already been recorded). • CONGRATULATIONS!!! • Your list of words/phrases is the STARTER for your school’s • New Vision!

  27. Whole Group Activity # 5: Sample Mission At Acorn School, we believe that student learning is the chief priority and all students can learn to their fullest potential. Students will develop their individual talents, critical thinking, and technology skills by being actively engaged in the learning process. Continuous commitment to improvement ensures that our students are well-rounded, self-directed, lifelong learners. By maintaining a safe and optimum learning environment, we provide the opportunity for students to be successful. Promoting high standards and expectations, teachers, administrators, parents, and the community share the responsibility for advancing the school's mission. Using the table on activity #5, discuss as a team HOW the sample mission addresses the concepts of “time, function, and what the sample school is about”?
