Bulimia By: Hailey Harbour, Shaina Katz, Kelsie Lowell, Allison Durrett Bulimia is a habitual disturbance in eating behavior mostlyaffectingyoungwomen of normal weight, characterizedbyfrequentepisodes of grosslyexcessivefoodintakefollowedbyself-induced vomiting toavertweightgain.
Definition • Bulimia is an eating disorder characterized by recurrent binge eating. • Bulimia was an unknown disease until the 20 century.
Signs/ symptoms • Some systems of this disease are chronic gastric reflux after eating, severe dental erosion, coughing and sneezing • How Long they should last before concern: erosion of teeth , swelling of glands, repeated vomiting.
3 wow’s • Among males, those who are part of a wrestling team are 7-10 times more likely to develop bulimia. • In a recent study of 6th grade girls, it was discovered that 70% first became concerned about there body image between ages 9-11 • children as young as 6 years old have been diagnosed with bulimia
Treatment/Managingthe problem • If treatment is available, examples and details listed: • Role of diet: random out of control binge eating • Role of exercise: may exercise all the time. Almost compulsively. • Role of medicine: laxitives, antidepressents, • Role of family support given: don’t police the food or cause them to be ashamed. Talk and listen to them • Management of problem short-term: stress internal organs, weak body. Prone to germs
Cont… Management of problem long-term: make the body useless, fatality, organ failure. Impact on the individual and family: this can make the family afraid and feeling useless. While the individual may be depressed or angry. Impact on the family: the family may be hurtsing because they didn’t know, and wishd they could of helped. May be angry at there child for doing such a thing
Statistics • About two percent of all adolescents and young women are bulimic. • 5 to 15 percent of all adult women have some symptoms of the disorder. • 84 percent of all bulimics have some college education. • 64 percent of all bulimics have a near-normal body weight. • 70 percent of all bulimics also suffer from moderate to severe depression. • Statistics on bulimia tell us that people with bulimia binge, on average, 11 times per week.
Statistics cont… Males on a wrestling team are 7 to 10 times more likely to develop bulimia than those who do not participate on a wrestling team. Homosexual males are more likely to develop bulimia than heterosexual males. People who frequently change diets are 18 times more likely to become anorexic or bulimic than their counterparts. Children of mothers that diet are more likely to develop eating disorders like bulimia. Half of all anorexics also develop bulimic tendencies
What causes eating disorders? Doctor don't know exactly. Possible causes include feeling stressed out or upset about something in your life, or feeling like you need to be "in control." Society also puts a lot of pressure on people to be thin. This pressure can contribute too. Did you know? • 8,000,000 or more people in the United States have an eating disorder. • 90% are women. • Victims may be rich or poor. • Eating disorders usually start in the teens but may begin as early as age 8.
