  2. The History of Meningiomas • This tumor was first established in 1730. • First triumphant in1878 and repeated in 1904. • 1938 the book “Meningiomas” • The book reviewed 313 cases • Categorized as Benign, Atypical, Malignant, or Anaplastic

  3. Causes of Meningiomas • Not clear on what exactly causes Meningiomas • Radiation (people who undergo radiation to the brain) • Cell Mutates/Alter In the meninges

  4. Symptoms of Meningiomas • Seizures • Visual changes • Hearing loss • Changes in thinking • Arm and/or leg weakness • Headaches • Nausea • Vomiting

  5. Benign Meningiomas • Usually Harmless • Not cancerous

  6. Atypical Meningiomas • Grow more rapidly than benign • Have a higher chance of growing back

  7. Malignant or Anaplastic Meningiomas • Form of CANCER!! • Also more likely to grow back

  8. Surgery!! • Starting surgery, the skull is cut open. • During the doctors cautiously remove the tumor. • After the wound is then stapled\stitched closed as shown.

  9. Surgery Complications!! • Accumulation of fluid • 20% develop seizures after surgery • neurologic problems (muscle weakness, speech problems, or difficulty with coordination) • increased risk of blood clots

  10. Radiation Treatment • Radiation Therapy • High energy x-rays to damage tumor cells • Usually after surgery recovery

  11. May damage nearby Brain Tissue Cant stop all tumor cells from growing Hair loss Mild Fatigue Mild skin redness or irritation Side Effects of Radiation Therapy
