  3. The Basics: Population Over 65 • 10,000 ‘boomers’ daily, for the next 16 years • By 2030: 72 million • By 2050: 89 million – one in five Americans • 7 in 10 will require on average 3 years of long-term care (LTC or LTSS)

  4. What is LTC (or LTSS)? • Beyond medical: includes broad range of services and supports needed for an extended period of time • Can be received in: • A home setting (HCBS) • An institutional setting (e.g., nursing home) LTSS can be provided by paid or unpaid caregivers.

  5. Mrs. Jimenez • 85 year-old widow • Lives with her adult children • Has multiple conditions: • High blood pressure • Heart failure • Diabetes • Medicare and Medicaid (“dual eligible”)

  6. Mrs. Jimenez • Needs help with daily activities • Risk of institutionalization • Not enough funds to pay for private care • Lack of care coordination • Re-hospitalizations • Wants to stay in the place she calls home

  9. Latinos and Aging • By double digits – higher levels of concern about ability to pay • More worried about being alone as they age • Less financially prepared – Medicaid
