Follow the adventure of a rock as it starts in a magma chamber, travels through dikes and volcanoes, transforms into lava, becomes extrusive igneous rock, undergoes weathering and erosion to form sedimentary rock, experiences metamorphism to become metamorphic rock, and eventually returns to the magma chamber.

The Rock Cycle By Pete Walker
How Igneous rocks are formed • I started out in a magma chamber way below earth’s surface • It was so hot in there that I melted into magma This is where I melted
My adventure to earth • I started to head up through a dike • My girlfriend was really sad that I left her • I then entered a pluton
Into the volcano • I then went up through another dike into the volcano • I met a new friend on the way up • It was really awesome I went all the way up through this cool thing with my new friend
Out of the volcano • I shot out of the volcano and said by to my new friend • The air outside the volcano was very cool compared to the magma chamber
Lava • I then turned into lava and was in a lava flow • I flowed down the volcano and met some of my old friends again
Extrusive Igneous rock • I cooled and formed into a big black rock • My friends were jealous of how good looking I was
Sedimentary Rock • Weathering and erosion is causing me to turn into Sedimentary rock
Sedimentary rock • I was deposited in layers called strata
Clastic Sedimentary Rock • I’m a clastic sedimentary rock • I formed from consolidation of sand derived from weathering and breakdown
Sedimentary rocks • Some of my friends contain really cool fossils in them
Chemical Sedimentary rock • One of my old friends from the magma chamber is now a chemical sedimentary rock • He formed when minerals in solution became oversaturated and precipitated
Organic Sedimentary Rock • My friend from the dike turned into an organic sedimentary rock • He contains materials generated by living organisms and includes carbonate minerals created by organisms such as coral
Sedimentary rock • Allsedimentary rocks are lithified into some collective mass • Lithification is any process that turns raw rock sediment into consolidated sedimentary rock
Tertiary Sedimentary Rock • Tertiary sedimentary rocks have tilted beds
Forming Into Metamorphic Rock • Metamorphic rock is rock that has been altered by heat and pressure
Metamorphic Rock • Metamorphic rocks can be formed by tectonic processes such as continental collisions which cause horizontal pressure, friction and distortion
Contact Metamorphism • Contact metamorphism happens when rock comes in contact with magma
Regional Metamorphism • Regional metamorphism is a large amount of metamorphism over a broad geographic area Regional Metamorphism
Foliation • Foliation is the layering within metamorphic rocks • Foliation occurs when rock is being compressed along one axis during crystallization
Foliated and Non-foliated Rock • Foliated Rock is a product of differential stress that deforms the rock in one plane, sometimes creating a plane of cleavage • Non-foliated rock does not have planar patterns of stress
Recrystallization • Recrystallization is the change in particular size of a rock during the process of metamorphism
Back to magma • I started to melt back into magma again • I met some of my old friends Metamorphic Rock
In the Magma Chamber • I didn’t want to go to the cold earth again • I started to go up a dike
Intrusive Igneous Rock • I started getting surrounded by pre-existing rock • It was really scary
Intrusive Igneous Rock • I started cooling and solidifying slowly • I wasn’t so scared anymore
Intrusive Igneous Rock • As a result I am now course grained • It’s really cool to be an Intrusive Igneous rock
Batholiths and Laccoliths • One of my old friends was in the core of a major mountain range • He got exposed by erosion and was a part of a huge batholith
