Oklahoma responsibility • Our goal is to identify radiation hard high speed PiN diodes and VCSELs and measure their lifetime. • High speed PiN arrays available on the market are GaAs or InGaAs. • Radiation tests performed by KK in August 2007 have revealed that these devices are not radiation hard.
PiNs to be tested • Contacted Hamamatsu to get the Si PiN diodes. • Got two types of single PiN diodes to test them this spring/summer • S9055-01 • S5973-01 • In case of success have an agreement that Hamamatsu will produce arrays for us. • In addition, have one type of GaAs PiN array to test
VCSELs to test • Want to test following VCSELs • AOC: HFE8012-103 • Truelight: TSA-8B12-000 • ULM:ULM850-10-TT-N0112U • Not sure if there is a need to test them...
Irradiation tests • TID test with gamma rays at BNL together with SMU – started yesterday, will finish tomorrow. • Passive test of PiNs only. • Irradiation dose: 0.15 kGy/h and 0.3 kGy/h. • Measured PiN’s responsivity before irradiation, will measure its current right after irradiation.
Irradiation tests (2) • 230 MeV protons in Boston together with SMU • Want to have total dose of the order of 40 MRad • Plan to test 2 of each type of PiNs and VCSELs • Pre-irradiation tests: IV for PiNs, optical power for VCSELs • Have a simple setup for online test • Plan to monitor PiN’s response and VCSEL’s optical power • PiN’s leakage current • Temperature • Take out 1 of each devices when their responsivity will be at the level of ~30% of the initial – want to perform lifetime test anyway, need alive detectors
Irradiation tests (3) • Participate in KK’s tests with 24 GeV protons at CERN in August • Not sure if there will be a possibility for the online test of PiNs • Passive test of PiNs can be done • Would be interesting to compare results of PiN responsivity after irradiation with low energy and high energy protons.
Lifetime test • After irradiation in June at Boston, plan to start the lifetime test of irradiated PiNs and VCSELs. • Currently have a running test for single channel. Also have ready-to-use setup to test up to 64 channels simultaneously. • Monitor PiNs current and temperature. • For VCSELs will monitor their optical power
Summary • PiN and VCSEL candidates identified • All PiN candidates and 1 VCSEL candidate are at Oklahoma • Still wait for two VCSEL candidates • Expect to have some results on radiation hardness from irradiations with 230 MeV and 24 GeV protons by the end of this year • Full scale TID test – to be determined • Can start lifetime test of irradiated PiNs, VCSELs which will survive an irradiation
