  1. Atomic Structure Neils Bohr…who’s that guy?

  2. Current Atomic Structure • Current atomic structure is attributed to scientist Neils Bohr • Bohr theorized that electron motion could not be predicted, but that we could determine where we could find them Bohr called these areas… ELECTRON CLOUDS

  3. Electron clouds • There are 7 clouds, but we will only cover 4 because they can overlap becoming too advanced • Each cloud is limited to how many electrons it can hold… 8 2 Cloud 1 Cloud 3 18 8 Cloud 4 Cloud 2

  4. Atomic structure practice 7 • If you had electrons we would fill the 1st cloud with electrons 2 5 • The remaining electrons would go in the 2nd cloud

  5. ELECTRON CLOUD RULES If the outermost cloud has NOT been completely filled, the atom/element is considered REACTIVE! If the outermost cloud IS completely filled, the atom/element is considered UNREACTIVE!

  6. Practice! 2 CLOUD 1 = 11 11 P= 8 CLOUD 2 = Na 11 E= 1 CLOUD 3 = n= 12 23.0

  7. DRAWING A BOHR MODEL STEP 1: DETERMINE PROTONS, NEUTRONS, AND ELECTRONS STEP 2: DRAW A NUCLEUS (ABOUT THE SIZE OF A NICKEL) STEP 3: WRITE PROTONS AND NEUTRONS INSIDE THE NUCLEUS STEP 4: START DRAWING AND FILING IN ELECTRON CLOUDS WITH DOTS FOR ELECTRONS

  8. Practice! Cloud 1 **Can hold ______electrons Reactive/ Unreactive? P= 1 1 H 1 E= 1 0 n= 2 e 1p 0n

  9. Practice! Cloud 1 **Can hold ______electrons Reactive/ Unreactive? P= 2 2 He 2 E= 4 2 n= 2 e 2p 2n e

  10. Practice! 2 Cloud 1 Cloud 2 **Can hold _____electrons Reactive/ Unreactive? P= 7 7 N 7 E= 14 7 n= e 8 e e 7p e 7n e e e

  11. Practice! 2 Cloud 1 Cloud 2 **Can hold _____electrons Reactive/ Unreactive? P= 10 10 Ne 10 E= 20 10 n= e e 8 e e e 10p e 10n e e e e
