INTRODUCTION • What is FYP? • Why is it important? FYP is an academic but structured research activity germane to the School of Bioprocess Engineering’s area of specialization and it is COMPULSORY for final year students to undertake and complete a project as part of the requirement for the conferment of the bachelor’s degree in engineering

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT Semester 2013/2014
TIME ALLOCATION FOR FYP 1 • Seminar/ briefing/ workshop [1 hr per week for 14 weeks (Total = 14 hrs)] • Activities related final year project including meeting with Supervisor, literature review and proposal preparation [5 hr per week for 14 weeks (Total = 70 hrs)] Semester 2013/2014

Log Book • During the course of the FYP, students are required to submit reports on the progress and conclusions on the project each time they meet with their supervisors. • Students have to meet their supervisors at least SIX(6) times per semester. • Students are required to bring along the log book each time they meet their supervisors. • Some of the points assessed in the log book are: • students’ progress based on the Gantt Chart • project implementation performance • students’ intellectual/character development
Supervisor’s Expectation • Students meet their supervisor regularly to discuss the project. • Students punctual for the meeting/appointments with the supervisors. • Project flows according to the plan. • Suggestions from the supervisor are taken into considerations.
Supervisor’s Expectation • Students can work independently and provide good suggestions/recommendations to improve the project plan. • Students demonstrated extra efforts (read a lot journals). AVOID LAST MINUTE WORK!!!!!!!
How to get A for FYP??? • Read a lot of journals! • Always meet your supervisors to discuss, share information and shows progress on your project-record in your log book • Be independent and active • Manage your time wisely • Make sure you understand 120% of your project • Make sure you check your progress report/proposal with your supervisor at least twice before you submit to the FYP Coordinator and submit on time-late submission will affect your marks! • Avoid plagarism!
Avoid plagirism!!! • “ Plagiarism is the unauthorized use or close imitation and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one’s own original work” • Student are caught for plagiarizing other people’s work can fail their FYP if there are enough evidence. • Please learn how to cite/acknowledge other people’s work correctly.
THINGS TO DO FROM NOW • Understand the objectives of your project. • Prepare a Gantt chart. • Prepare an outline of the content of your thesis. • Get the materials i.e. books or relevant literatures as much as possible from now. • Keep in touch & clear doubts via email with your supervisors. • Read a journal a day and summaries it. • Always update your Log Book - Keep all your works (research, design, experimental result, … etc) Bring along to meet supervisor.
